Jailed Palestinian Leader Marwan Barghouti Could Head ‘Democratic Renewal’, His Son Says

Marwan Barghouti, imprisoned in Israel for 24 years, remains a key figure for Palestinians and could lead to political change upon potential release, his son claims.
LONDON: Jailed in Israel for the past 24 years, Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti remains a rallying figure for his people and is seen as potentially leading a "democratic renewal," according to his son, Arab Barghouti.

Sometimes referred to as the 'Nelson Mandela of Palestine' by supporters, Barghouti, now 66, has become emblematic of the Palestinian cause.

Images of Barghouti are ubiquitous on walls in the occupied West Bank and were prevalent in Gaza before most of the area was destroyed by Israeli strikes during a conflict.

He is one of the leaders of the second intifada, the early-2000s Palestinian uprising, and his name is often discussed as a potential successor to 90-year-old Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas.

Arab Barghouti, now 35, who lives in Ramallah, has not seen his father for four years.

He dedicates his life to advocating for his release, with the last direct communication from Marwan Barghouti being before a deadly October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas.

Since then, updates have come through his lawyer, who visited him recently and reported that Marwan Barghouti has been physically assaulted multiple times in recent weeks.

Marwan Barghouti is severely malnourished, having lost approximately 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of weight according to reports.

Israeli prison authorities deny any mistreatment, stating there are no records of the described events.

Despite his father's deteriorating condition and long-term imprisonment, Arab Barghouti believes Marwan remains mentally strong and focused on the Palestinian cause.

He sees a dire need for unified leadership and believes his father embodies this potential for change and unity in Palestine.

As a member of Abbas' Fatah party, Marwan Barghouti is seen as one of the few figures who could gain acceptance from all Palestinian factions, including Hamas.

Arab Barghouti criticizes current Palestinian leadership, stating they are not effectively defending their people or addressing their struggles.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has been weakened significantly in recent years and is unable to operate freely.

He fears that the situation in the West Bank could lead to chaos.

Marwan Barghouti's future remains uncertain, as Israel has refused to release him in any prisoner exchanges since the conflict with Gaza escalated.

However, Arab Barghouti maintains hope for his father's eventual release and the potential political impact he could have upon being freed.
