Lockheed Martin and Saudi Arabia’s Engineering and Research for Aerospace and Defence Company, known as ERAF, have agreed to explore the joint development of an advanced unmanned turret system, marking a further step in expanding defence and technology cooperation between the United States and the kingdom.

The initiative reflects a shared interest in next-generation autonomous and remotely operated capabilities designed to enhance force protection and operational effectiveness.

Under the agreement, the two sides will assess opportunities to design and develop an unmanned turret that can be integrated onto a range of military platforms, including ground vehicles.

The system is expected to focus on modular design, advanced sensors, remote operation and potential autonomous features, allowing operators to engage threats while remaining protected.

Both companies have highlighted the importance of adaptability and interoperability with existing and future defence systems.

Saudi officials have framed the cooperation as aligned with the kingdom’s broader defence industrialisation strategy under Vision 2030, which aims to localise a significant portion of military spending and build domestic expertise in high-technology defence manufacturing.

ERAF’s involvement is intended to support knowledge transfer, skills development and the growth of Saudi Arabia’s indigenous defence sector, while benefiting from Lockheed Martin’s global experience in advanced weapons and systems integration.

For Lockheed Martin, the exploratory partnership underscores continued engagement with key regional partners and a focus on emerging technologies such as unmanned and remotely operated systems.

While the project remains at an early, exploratory stage, both parties have indicated that successful studies could lead to more formal development programmes, reinforcing long-term collaboration in defence innovation and capability development.
