Nasser Al-Attiyah Claims Historic Sixth Dakar Rally Victory in Saudi Arabia

The Qatari motorsport icon extends his legacy by winning the 2026 Dakar Rally amid fierce competition in Saudi Arabia’s deserts
Nasser Al-Attiyah secured a remarkable sixth Dakar Rally title as the 48th edition of the legendary rally-raid concluded in Saudi Arabia on January seventeenth, underscoring his status among the sport’s all-time greats.

The veteran driver, competing with a Dacia, demonstrated tactical acumen and consistency across the grueling thirteen stages and prologue that unfolded over nearly two weeks of intense competition across sand, rocks and desert plains.

His triumph marked another milestone in his storied career, equalling rare company among the elite drivers who have repeatedly conquered motorsport’s most demanding event.

The Dakar Rally 2026, hosted for the seventh consecutive year in Saudi Arabia, began on January third in Yanbu on the Red Sea coast before traversing diverse terrain that tested endurance, navigation and mechanical resilience.

The event drew a large international field of competitors from around the world in cars, bikes, trucks and other classes, reflecting the rally’s stature as the opening round of the World Rally-Raid Championship season.

Notable performances throughout the rally included intense battles for stage honours, rain-forest-like dunes and shifting desert winds that challenged even the most seasoned entrants.

Al-Attiyah’s victory was shaped by a blend of strategic pacing and mechanical reliability, particularly as rivals encountered setbacks.

Among those was multiple-time champion Carlos Sainz, whose title ambitions were hampered by navigational errors, and Daniel Sanders, who suffered a high-speed crash that took him out of motorbike contention.

The rally also featured a strong Saudi contingent, with local talents gaining experience and showcasing the Kingdom’s rising presence in global motorsport.

Al-Attiyah’s win not only adds to his remarkable Dakar résumé but also highlights the enduring appeal of the Dakar Rally as a proving ground for both human and machine against some of the harshest landscapes on the planet.
