Trump Defends Saudi Crown Prince in Heated Exchange After Reporter Questions Khashoggi Murder and 9/11 Links

President rebukes journalist’s question during Oval Office meeting, framing it as unnecessary and praising the visiting Saudi leader
President Donald Trump sharply rebuked a White House reporter after she asked Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and alleged concerns from families of September 11 victims, characterising the question as inappropriate and standing by the visiting royal.

The exchange occurred during a press availability in the Oval Office, where Trump and the crown prince were discussing bilateral cooperation and potential economic and defence initiatives.

When the reporter raised Khashoggi’s killing — which U.S. intelligence has assessed was likely approved by the crown prince, a finding that Riyadh denies — Trump interrupted, dismissing the question as an attempt to ‘‘embarrass our guest’’ and labelling the reporter’s outlet as ‘‘fake news.’’ He referred to Khashoggi as ‘‘somebody that was extremely controversial’’ and said ‘‘a lot of people didn’t like that gentleman,’’ adding that ‘‘things happen’’ and asserting that the crown prince ‘‘knew nothing about it’’ and that the matter should be left there.

There were also references in the exchange to families of those killed in the September eleventh attacks, though Trump did not directly answer questions concerning any alleged links between the crown prince and the planning of that plot.

The rebuke underscored Trump’s broader effort to emphasise strategic ties with Riyadh, including arms sales, investment commitments and cooperation on regional security, while downplaying long-running criticism over human rights.

The crown prince, for his part, described Khashoggi’s death as ‘‘painful’’ and a ‘‘huge mistake,’’ and spoke about efforts to improve internal safeguards.

The contentious discussion highlighted underlying tensions between maintaining strong diplomatic and economic relations with Saudi Arabia and addressing unresolved questions about accountability for high-profile incidents such as Khashoggi’s murder.

Trump’s response drew attention both domestically and internationally, as critics said his remarks appeared to dismiss serious human rights concerns.

Supporters of the president argue his stance reflects a priority on pragmatic engagement with key partners in an increasingly competitive global environment.

The episode is likely to shape ongoing debates about U.S. foreign policy, press freedom and the balance between strategic alliances and accountability for past actions.

As the bilateral relationship evolves, rhetoric from both capitals indicates a continued emphasis on cooperation even as sensitive historical issues resurface in public forums.
