LONDON: Ahmad Al-Sharaa has made history as the first president of the Syrian Arab Republic to attend an annual UN Climate Change Conference.
His arrival on Thursday in Belem, Brazil, which is hosting the 2025 event, COP30, was warmly welcomed by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.The conference, taking place from November 10 to 21, brings together representatives from over 190 countries, including heads of state, ministers, and international leaders.
The assembly aims to address pressing climate change issues and agree on commitments to tackle these challenges.
Preceding the main event is a two-day summit of world leaders scheduled for Thursday and Friday.During his stay, Al-Sharaa will engage in meetings with delegates and leaders from various countries, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency.This trip marks President Al-Sharaa's first visit to South America since taking office in December.
His tenure began after the collapse of the Assad regime due to an insurgent offensive that concluded nearly 14 years of civil war in Syria.Accompanied by Prime Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, Al-Sharaa is scheduled to visit Washington from Monday to Tuesday next week.
A significant moment during this trip will be his meeting with US President
Donald Trump at the White House.
