Madrid: The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party, stated on Tuesday that the truce established between Hamas and Israel should not equate to granting impunity for what he described as 'genocide' in Gaza.
Sánchez made this assertion during an interview with Cadena Ser radio, emphasizing the necessity for justice to be served regarding those who he believes are responsible.Sánchez was specifically asked about the potential for legal proceedings against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He reiterated that those who were central figures in the alleged 'genocide' committed in Gaza must face justice and cannot escape accountability.
Spain has been among the most vocal critics of Israel's military actions in Gaza within Europe, announcing in September that its prosecutor would investigate 'serious violations' of human rights in Gaza alongside the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.In addition to addressing accountability through legal means, Sánchez confirmed Spain’s ongoing arms embargo on Israel.
This embargo will remain in place until there is clear progress towards peace, he stated.
Moreover, Sánchez suggested that Spain could participate in international efforts aimed at securing peace and facilitating the reconstruction of Gaza in the future.
