Israel Transfers 30 Palestinian Bodies to Red Cross in Gaza
Under the terms of a recent ceasefire, Israel has handed over the remains of 30 Palestinians to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza.
LONDON: Following the US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas last week, Palestinian medical authorities in Gaza received the bodies of 30 individuals previously held by Israel.
The transfer was facilitated through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
According to Wafa news agency, since the enforcement of the ceasefire, Israel has handed over the remains of 120 Palestinians.
In a reciprocal gesture, Hamas has returned two more bodies of hostages to Israel overnight, bringing the total number released by them to nine out of 28.
The terms of the ceasefire stipulate that for every slain Palestinian held by Hamas, Israel will return the bodies of 15 Palestinians.
This exchange is part of a broader deal aimed at easing tensions and facilitating the recovery process in both territories.
Palestinian forensic teams have noted signs of abuse on some of the returned bodies, including evidence of beatings, handcuffing, and blindfolding.
As of now, families have confirmed the identities of four victims, while others await further examination and documentation before they can be identified and returned to their families.
In the past 24 hours, medical sources reported to Wafa that 29 bodies were taken to hospitals in Gaza, including 22 recovered from rubble and 10 with injuries.
Despite a ceasefire going into effect on Friday, the death toll has continued to rise, reaching 67,967 individuals as of current reports.
The incomplete count is attributed to the fact that many victims remain trapped under rubble and are inaccessible to ambulance and rescue crews.
