Following a UN warning about the disastrous levels of food insecurity in Yemen, the country's government is seeking international support to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.
DUBAI: In response to the United Nations' warning that food insecurity in Yemen has reached 'disastrous' levels, the Yemeni government has appealed to the Security Council for urgent assistance to mitigate an economic collapse.
The loss of oil revenues, which previously constituted 70% of public income, has severely crippled state services and exacerbated living conditions for millions already affected by hunger and displacement, as reported by the state news agency SABA on Tuesday.Yemen's UN envoy Abdullah Al-Saadi highlighted that nearly half of Yemen's children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition, with many succumbing to death in displacement camps.
The government emphasized that the economic crisis, compounded by ongoing conflict, climate shocks, and a decline in international aid, is driving more people towards famine and undermining any prospects for recovery.Al-Saadi urged donor nations and organizations to increase funding ahead of an upcoming international food security conference scheduled for October.
