Israeli Airstrike Targets Houthi Government in Sanaa: Prime Minister Killed

The Israeli military launches precision strikes against Houthi-controlled government buildings in Yemen's capital, resulting in the death of Ahmed Al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the militant-held government.
In a significant escalation of aerial operations in the region, the Israeli military targeted Houthi-controlled government institutions in Sanaa, Yemen, on Thursday.

The strike resulted in the killing of Ahmed Al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the militant-held government, and injured several other ministers and officials, according to a statement from the Houthis.

The attack took place during a 'routine workshop' convened by the Houthi-controlled government to assess its activities over the past year.

Senior Houthi officials, including the prime minister, were gathering to watch a pre-recorded speech by Abdul Malik Al-Houthi, the group's leader, who was discussing developments in Gaza and vowing retaliation against Israel.

In response to the strike, the Israeli military stated that they had 'precisely struck a Houthi terrorist regime military target' in Sanaa.

However, no further details or comments regarding the operation were provided at this time.

Ahmed Al-Rahawi, originally from Abyan province, aligned with the Houthis after their takeover of significant portions of Yemen in 2014, which initiated the country's ongoing civil war.

He was appointed prime minister in August 2020.

This incident marks the first time a senior Houthi official has been killed since the United States and Israel began their air and naval campaign targeting the militant group.

The campaign was launched in response to the Houthis' missile and drone attacks on Israel and Red Sea shipping.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for disrupting shipping in the Red Sea, which handles approximately $1 trillion worth of goods annually, as part of their campaign supporting Palestinians.

In May, an agreement between the Trump administration and the Houthis was announced to halt such strikes, though the deal did not include ceasing attacks on targets believed to be aligned with Israel.
