Israel Identifies Body of Hostage Idan Shtivi Retrieved from Gaza

Following a military operation, Israel has recovered the remains of two hostages in the Gaza Strip, identifying one as 28-year-old Idan Shtivi.
TEL AVIV: The Israeli government announced on Saturday the identification of the body of hostage Idan Shtivi among the remains retrieved from the Gaza Strip.

This revelation came during a military operation that successfully recovered two sets of remains, including those of Ilan Weiss and now officially confirmed as Shtivi.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office made this statement following the initial announcement on Friday regarding the retrieval of Weiss' body along with that of another hostage whose identity was then unknown but has since been confirmed as Shtivi. With the recovery and identification of Weiss and Shtivi's bodies, Israel maintains its count of 48 hostages currently held in Gaza, noting that only an estimated 20 of them are believed to still be alive.

The Israeli military provided a detailed account of Shtivi's abduction and murder, emphasizing his age at the time of his death: "Idan Shtivi was abducted from the Tel Gama area and brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists after acting to rescue and evacuate others from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023.

He was 28 years old at the time of his death," they stated. The October 2023 attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and around 251 hostages taken, according to Israeli tallies.

In response, Israel initiated a military assault on Gaza's southern communities, leading to significant casualties.

The health ministry in Gaza has reported that over 63,000 Palestinians have lost their lives due to the ensuing conflict.

This war has had a devastating impact on the enclave, displacing nearly its entire population, severely damaging infrastructure, and precipitating a humanitarian crisis.
