Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces Shell Besieged Darfur City, Killing 24 and Wounding 55

A medical group reports that the paramilitary force attacked densely populated areas in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur province, causing significant casualties.
Cairo: A paramilitary group fighting against Sudan’s military has shelled a besieged city in the western region of Darfur, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 individuals and injuring 55 others, including five women.

According to the Sudan Doctors Network, which monitors the country's civil war, the attack targeted the central market and Awlad al-Reef neighborhood in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur province. The city has been a focal point for conflict between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for over a year.

It remains one of the last strongholds of the military in the Darfur region.

The RSF did not respond to a request for comment on the incident.Sudan's civil war began in April 2023, escalating from long-standing tensions between the military and the RSF, which erupted into open conflict in Khartoum and across the country.

Recent attacks by the RSF have caused extensive harm, particularly in el-Fasher and its surrounding areas.

In August alone, at least 89 civilians were killed within a span of 10 days, including 16 individuals who were summarily executed, as reported by the U.N. high commissioner for human rights. The ongoing conflict has led to dire conditions for the population.

The city is under siege, cut off from aid for over 16 months.

Approximately 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, are trapped and living in desperate circumstances.

According to UNICEF, this situation results in severe acute malnutrition affecting an estimated 6,000 children, who are at high risk of death. The scale of the crisis is immense, with over 40,000 people killed and more than 14 million displaced since the conflict began.

Famine has struck parts of the country, driving families to extreme measures for survival.

The conflict has been marked by ethnic killings, rape, and other gross atrocities, as reported by the United Nations and human rights organizations. The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with these events.
