Security forces in Jordan’s Eastern Military Zone have intercepted an attempt to smuggle drugs into the country by attaching them to balloons equipped with basic guidance systems.

The discovery was made by border guard units in collaboration with security agencies and the national anti-narcotics department, according to state news agency Petra.

The balloons were monitored as they entered Jordanian territory and were subsequently brought down.

Following this, the drugs were confiscated and handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation.

This operation underscores Jordan's commitment to combating drug trafficking and securing its borders.

Western anti-narcotics officials have highlighted that Jordan serves as a transit point for the Gulf states for Captagon, an addictive amphetamine-type stimulant produced in significant quantities in Syria.

In response to this challenge, Jordan and Syria agreed in January to establish a joint security committee aimed at enhancing border security, preventing arms and drug smuggling, and countering the resurgence of Daesh (ISIS) terrorist activities.
