Lebanese President Seeks International Pressure on Israel Amid Disarmament Efforts

President Aoun calls for US and French intervention to end Israeli hostilities against Lebanon.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called on the United States and France to exert pressure on Israel to cease its attacks on Lebanon.

This appeal comes as the Lebanese army initiates a security plan aimed at disarming Hezbollah and other armed groups, amid escalating tensions with Israel.

The request was made during a meeting with French Envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian, who arrived in Beirut from Saudi Arabia for discussions concerning the disarmament efforts and Israeli aggression.

According to Aoun, the Lebanese army's newly implemented security plan in the south of the Litani River aims to restrict weapons possession to the state.

However, he emphasized that ongoing Israeli occupation and refusal to halt its attacks hinder the full deployment of the army up to the international borders.

The president stated that external pressure from France or the U.S. could assist the Lebanese army in completing their security plan.

The security plan involves deploying barriers and checkpoints nationwide with instructions to confiscate weapons and ammunition from all groups, Aoun explained.

He expressed gratitude for France's role in renewing the UNIFIL mandate, which he believes provides essential time for the Lebanese army to strengthen its capabilities.

Aoun also praised French President Emmanuel Macron for organizing two international conferences aimed at supporting Lebanon’s economy and military efforts.

In a separate development, the Israeli military continues its near-daily strikes on Lebanese territory.

On Wednesday, it targeted areas in the eastern mountain range and a motorcyclist near the Syrian border, resulting in casualties attributed to Hezbollah.

The Israeli army claims these attacks target strategic weapons sites in the Bekaa Valley.

Additionally, there have been reports of property damage along the Lebanese border.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem criticized the Lebanese government for seeking to disarm the resistance movement amid ongoing aggression from Israel.

He questioned the government’s commitment to upholding sovereignty and suggested that the U.S. is working towards subjugating Lebanon as part of a 'Greater Israel' project.
