Low Daily Dose of Aspirin Reduces Liver Fat, US Study Finds

A recent American study has discovered that consuming a low daily dose of aspirin can significantly reduce liver fat content.
Researchers have clarified that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is characterized by increased fat accumulation in the liver due to factors such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. The results of the study were published on Monday in the JAMA journal.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has become increasingly common around the world, especially in Middle Eastern and Western countries, where obesity rates are rising. The disease affects up to a third of adults in the United States.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease can worsen and lead to inflammation, swelling, and liver damage due to the buildup of fat, which may result in serious liver scarring or even liver cancer, similar to the damages caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

During the study, researchers tested the potential of aspirin as a medication that reduces inflammation and affects fat metabolism in the liver. The clinical trial observed 80 adults with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease randomly assigned to receive either a low daily dose of aspirin (81 milligrams) or a placebo for six months.

The trial tested a low dose of aspirin to ensure it was safe and well-tolerated by patients. By the end of the trial, the average change in liver fat content decreased by 6.6% in the group taking aspirin, compared to a 3.6% increase in liver fat content in the placebo group.

Overall, researchers noted that a low dose of aspirin reduced the average liver fat content by 10.2% in patients compared to the placebo. Aspirin also improved various markers of liver health.

The researchers consider aspirin a cost-effective and appealing option for preventing the disease's progression to liver cirrhosis or cancer, the most feared complications of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Dr. Tracy G. Simon, the lead researcher of the study from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, stated, “Numerous blood tests and noninvasive imaging techniques for liver fats, inflammation, and fibrosis have shown significant benefits in the group that took aspirin.”

According to the university's website, she added that the study's results support the potential benefits of aspirin for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Dr. Simon mentioned that further studies are needed to determine whether continuous use of aspirin could reduce the risk of individuals developing long-term health complications associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
