Assassination of Iranian Judge Ehsan Bagheri in Shiraz Raises Security Concerns

Assassination of Iranian Judge Ehsan Bagheri in Shiraz Raises Security Concerns

The brutal killing of Judge Bagheri shines a light on the ongoing risks faced by judicial officials in Iran.
Judge Ehsan Bagheri, the head of Branch 102 of the Criminal Court 2 in Shiraz, Iran, was assassinated on the morning of May 27, 2025, according to local media reports.

The judiciary's Mizan Online confirmed the incident, stating that Judge Bagheri was attacked by two assailants while commuting to work.

The judiciary described the event as a 'terrorist act,' resulting in his death at the age of 38.

Iranian news agency IRNA reported that Judge Bagheri had approximately 12 years of experience within the judicial system before his untimely death.

This incident has reignited discussions regarding the safety of judiciary members in Iran, particularly in light of the increasing violence aimed at judicial figures in recent years.

The assassination of judiciary officials is part of a broader trend of attacks on individuals within the Iranian legal system, which many analysts say reflects the tensions within the country's political and social landscape.

As judicial officials often play pivotal roles in enforcing laws related to political dissidents and social unrest, their positions have made them targets of violence.

The Iranian judiciary has not published further details regarding the identity or motivations of the attackers, nor has there been any immediate claim of responsibility from groups that typically engage in violence against state officials.

Local authorities are expected to launch an investigation as they seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the assassination and to enhance security for judicial figures in the region.

The implications of such targeted violence extend beyond individual cases, raising questions about the rule of law and the security of legal institutions in Iran.
