Bahrain Elected to UN Security Council Amid Regional Diplomatic Efforts

Bahrain joins Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia for two-year terms starting January 1, 2024.
The United Nations General Assembly elected Bahrain, along with Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Latvia, and Liberia, to the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

The elected nations will serve two-year terms beginning on January 1, 2024. Bahrain garnered 186 votes, with DRC at 183, Liberia at 181, Colombia receiving 180, and Latvia securing 178 votes.

These countries participated uncontested within their respective regional groups, yet a two-thirds majority was required for election to the Security Council.

This marks Bahrain's second tenure on the council.

Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif Al Zayani characterized the election results as a reflection of “unwavering trust and confidence” in Bahrain’s diplomatic initiatives.

He articulated that this election validates the country’s commitment towards enhancing international peace and security.

In his statement, Dr. Al Zayani noted that Bahrain would serve as the Arab representative on the council and emphasized the urgency of discussing the situation in Gaza during their term.

He indicated that resolving the enduring Palestinian-Israeli conflict is essential for establishing stability in the region, and called for a ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the advancement of a two-state solution leading to a viable state of Palestine.

Dr. Al Zayani expressed intentions to advocate for the recognition of Palestine by more countries as part of their diplomatic and political efforts.

He also voiced support for an upcoming peace conference co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, underscoring the need for a unified global approach to peace and diplomacy in the region.

Bahrain’s election coincides with its normalization of relations with Israel, established in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, in which the nation has persistently advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza and a commitment to a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli dispute.

The UN Security Council possesses unique authority within the UN framework, enabling it to impose binding measures, including sanctions and the approval of military interventions.

The five permanent members—Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States—wield veto power over its decisions.

The newly elected members will replace Algeria, Sierra Leone, South Korea, Guyana, and Slovenia at the end of their terms in December 2025.

In a separate decision, the UN General Assembly elected former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to preside over its 80th session, set to commence in September.
