Former Israeli Prime Minister Accuses Government of War Crimes in Gaza

Ehud Olmert criticizes the current military operations as indiscriminate and without clear objectives, raising concerns over humanitarian impacts.
In a recent opinion piece, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has accused the current Israeli government of engaging in war crimes amid ongoing military operations in Gaza.

Olmert, who led the country from 2006 to 2009, claimed that thousands of innocent Palestinians have lost their lives due to these actions, which he characterized as a conflict devoid of purpose and clear planning.

Olmert specifically criticized the administration of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing it as a 'criminal gang' and asserting that the military strategy has established an unprecedented precedent in Israel's history.

He stated that the toll on Palestinian civilians is reaching 'monstrous proportions' in recent weeks, indicating a significant humanitarian crisis.

Further elaborating on his stance, Olmert expressed that the ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza lack relevance to 'legitimate war goals' and are instead a 'private political war' that has turned the enclave into a 'humanitarian disaster area.' He noted a shift in his perspective, stating that he previously rejected claims of war crimes but can no longer do so.

According to Olmert, the actions are characterized by 'indiscriminate, limitless, cruel and criminal killing of civilians.'

He attributed this situation to a government policy that he claims is 'knowingly, evilly, maliciously, irresponsibly dictated.'

In a related interview, Olmert referred to the conflict as 'a war without a purpose' and underscored that it fails to achieve any meaningful outcome, particularly regarding the lives of hostages.

Olmert's statements align with comments made by Yair Golan, a prominent Israeli politician and former deputy chief of staff of the Israeli army, who criticized the morality of the military actions, emphasizing that responsible governance does not involve harming civilians or forcibly expelling populations.

Golan remarked that a 'sane country does not fight against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby.'
