French Prime Minister Affirms Commitment to Palestinian Statehood Recognition

François Bayrou emphasizes collaborative efforts by France, the UK, and Canada to recognize Palestine amid ongoing conflict in Gaza.
French Prime Minister François Bayrou confirmed on Tuesday that the initiative to recognize a Palestinian state, as planned by France, the United Kingdom, and Canada, 'will not stop' following warnings from these countries to take action against Israel if it does not halt its military operations in the Gaza Strip.

During a session of questions in the National Assembly, Bayrou stated, 'For the first time, three major countries have decided to jointly raise objections to what is happening' in Gaza, and 'to jointly recognize the state of Palestine.

This initiative, which has been launched, will not cease.'

His comments came in response to a question from Mathilde Panot, the leader of the La France Insoumise party, who queried whether he intended to 'recognize the state of Palestine when there are no Palestinians left.'

Bayrou, an advocate for a two-state solution, emphasized the necessity of repeated condemnations and warnings directed at Israel, stating that these actions are 'completely clear in their direction and required of us.'

He identified the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, as the trigger for the ensuing violence and humanitarian crisis.

Leaders from France, the UK, and Canada issued a joint warning on Monday that they 'will not remain passive' in the face of the 'shameful actions' conducted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in Gaza.

They threatened to take concrete measures if Israel does not cease its military actions and allow humanitarian aid to enter the region.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reiterated in a radio interview that Paris is determined to recognize Palestine, stating that this move is 'in the interest of both Palestinians and Israelis.'

Barrot remarked, 'We cannot leave Gaza's children with a legacy of violence and hatred; therefore, all of this must stop.

That is why we are determined to recognize the state of Palestine.'

The French Foreign Minister also confirmed that France supports a review of the European Union-Israel partnership agreement to ensure that Israel adheres to its commitments regarding human rights.

He emphasized that the situation in Gaza is 'untenable,' suggesting that the notion of 'blind violence' and the Israeli government's obstruction of humanitarian aid has turned Gaza into a place where people are dying, which could be characterized as a grave.

Barrot described these practices as a gross violation of all international law, which he believes undermines the security of Israel that France aims to support, arguing that 'one who sows violence shall reap violence.'

He reiterated the call for Israel to permit 'large-scale' and 'unimpeded' entry of humanitarian aid.

Furthermore, Fabien Roussel, leader of the French Communist Party, announced that his party would host a large delegation from the Palestine Liberation Organization on June 4 to launch a European campaign for the recognition of the state of Palestine.
