Germany's Imports from Russia Plummet 95% Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

Trade between Germany and Russia has significantly declined due to stringent sanctions linked to the war in Ukraine.
Germany's imports from Russia have decreased by 94.6%, amounting to €1.8 billion ($2.05 billion) in 2024 compared to levels recorded in 2021. This stark reduction is attributed to sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The figures were released by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, indicating a substantial impact on trade relations.

In 2021, prior to the onset of the conflict and the implementation of 17 sanction packages by the European Union, Germany imported Russian goods valued at €33.1 billion.

In addition to imports, Germany's exports to Russia also saw a steep decline, falling by 71.6% to €7.6 billion in 2024 compared to 2021.

The European Union as a whole has similarly reduced its imports from Russia by 78% and has cut exports to Russia by 65% during the same timeframe.

This dramatic shift in trade dynamics has resulted in a trade deficit of €4.5 billion ($5.1 billion) for the EU in 2024, down from a trade surplus of €147.5 billion in 2022.

The 17th sanctions package, aimed at curtailing Russia's military efforts, came into effect in May 2024 as the conflict in Ukraine continues.

Prior to the war, the EU was Russia's largest trading partner in 2020, accounting for 36.5% of its imports and 37.9% of its exports.
