Gunman Opens Fire in Mosque in Yemen's Al-Bayda, Leaving Dozens Dead

The attack during Eid al-Adha prayers highlights the ongoing violence in Yemen amid a prolonged conflict.
On June 7, 2025, a gunman opened fire during evening prayers at Hammat Okoos Mosque in the village of Qarn Al-Asad, located in the Al-Arsh district of Rada’a city in Yemen's Al-Bayda province, resulting in the deaths of more than a dozen people and injuring several others.

The attack occurred shortly after sunset prayers while worshippers were engaged in Eid al-Adha chants.

Eyewitness accounts reported that the assailant began his attack at a nearby grocery store, targeting two young men before proceeding to the mosque.

Among the deceased was Ahmed Abdrabbeh Al-Aji, the grocery store owner, along with one of his associates from the Rayashiyah area.

Following the initial shooting, the attacker entered the mosque, where he opened fire on congregants.

A 12-year-old boy, identified as “Walad Al-Ansi,” sustained injuries during the incident, as did a qat vendor present in the mosque at the time.

Witnesses reported that the mosque's loudspeakers remained active during the shooting, amplifying the chaos and distress experienced by the parishioners, which reverberated throughout the local neighborhood.

The assailant was apprehended approximately an hour and a half after the attack.

The injured were transported to Dhamar Hospital, where medical officials indicated that the number of fatalities could increase due to the severity of the injuries.

This incident underscores the pervasive violence affecting Yemen, where the population has suffered from the ramifications of a protracted civil conflict that has lasted for over a decade.

Following the Houthis' seizure of control in September 2014 and the subsequent Saudi-led military intervention commencing in March 2015, Yemen has experienced staggering humanitarian crises, including widespread economic collapse and societal fragmentation, with millions facing dire living conditions.
