Imola Emerges as Standby Venue if Bahrain or Saudi Arabia Grands Prix Are Cancelled

Formula One evaluates contingency plans as Middle East security concerns raise calendar uncertainty
Formula One is assessing contingency arrangements that could see the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola reinstated should races in Bahrain or Saudi Arabia be cancelled amid rising regional tensions.

The possibility has gained attention as security concerns in parts of the Gulf prompt organisers to review the resilience of the 2026 race calendar.

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia host two of the championship’s early-season events, both central to Formula One’s commercial and strategic presence in the Middle East.

While neither event has been formally called off, senior figures within the sport are understood to be maintaining alternative venue options in the event that logistical or safety considerations prevent races from proceeding as scheduled.

Imola, which previously dropped off the calendar due to capacity constraints and scheduling priorities, is widely regarded as a ready-made replacement given its existing infrastructure and recent experience hosting grands prix.

The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit has staged multiple Formula One rounds in recent years, including emergency additions during disrupted seasons.

Its homologation status and established operational framework make it one of the most viable reserve options should the need arise.

Organisers have emphasised that no final decisions have been taken and that ongoing dialogue with regional promoters and local authorities continues.

Formula One’s leadership has reiterated its commitment to delivering a full championship season while prioritising safety for teams, staff and spectators.

The Middle East has become a cornerstone of Formula One’s global expansion strategy, with significant investment in state-of-the-art circuits and long-term hosting agreements.

Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit has been a mainstay of the calendar for two decades, while Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Corniche Circuit represents one of the sport’s newest and fastest street venues.

However, geopolitical developments can complicate large-scale international sporting events, particularly when travel, freight logistics and broadcast operations depend on stable regional conditions.

Motorsport’s global footprint requires rapid adaptability, and reserve circuits are routinely kept under review as part of risk management planning.

Should circumstances require a calendar adjustment, Imola’s return would provide continuity for teams and fans while maintaining the integrity of the championship schedule.

For now, the sport remains in a monitoring phase, balancing commercial commitments with evolving security assessments.
