Intensified Hostilities in Gaza Result in Heavy Casualties

Ongoing Israeli airstrikes lead to significant loss of life in Gaza amid military responses from Palestinian factions.
On May 21, 2025, Israeli forces launched a new wave of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, resulting in the reported deaths of 87 Palestinians.

This escalation involved extensive aerial and artillery bombardments from northern areas like Jabaliya to southern parts such as Khan Younis.

As conflict intensified, Khan Younis experienced a series of air raids that left at least nine people dead.

Simultaneously, the Jabaliya area was struck again, with five additional fatalities reported after an earlier attack that resulted in the deaths of 14 Palestinians, predominantly women and children.

An individual was also reported killed in an airstrike on Al-Mansoura Street in the Shujaiya neighborhood of eastern Gaza.

Earlier in the day, eight Palestinians lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the Al-Daraj neighborhood, while four were killed in an air raid targeting a distribution center for food supplies in downtown Gaza.

An additional strike aimed at a crowded market near Jabaliya further resulted in 11 casualties and around 60 injuries.

These attacks are part of a broader trend of intensified airstrikes on Gaza, which have targeted neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure, contributing to extensive humanitarian crises.

Since the resumption of Israeli military operations on March 18, following a breakdown of a ceasefire agreement, the Gaza Health Ministry has reported approximately 3,500 Palestinian fatalities and around 9,900 injuries.

In response to the hostilities, the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad, announced rocket strikes targeting the Israeli cities of Ashdod and Ashkelon.

The Israeli military stated that its air defense systems intercepted at least one projectile fired from northern Gaza aimed at Ashkelon with no reported injuries.

Israeli media indicated several alerts sounded again in areas around Gaza, with reports of rocket launches targeting Israeli military positions along the border.

In a related development, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) mobilized additional troops into Gaza, as senior officials have signaled intentions to enlarge territorial control within the region.

The deployment included the Kfir Brigade, part of a broader operation alongside the Golani and Nahal brigades.

IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi indicated plans for an expanded ground offensive aimed at dismantling the military capabilities of Hamas, asserting that further ground operations would be initiated.

During these ongoing clashes, an Israeli sergeant was confirmed dead following an explosive device incident in Khan Younis, reportedly caused by an explosive planted by Palestinian resistance groups.

This incident aligns with previous reports of significant losses faced by Israeli forces since the onset of their renewed military actions.

Currently, Israeli forces have advanced significantly into southern Gaza, including the city of Rafah, and have established control over strategic areas that connect to Khan Younis, alongside operations in the eastern outskirts of Gaza City, as well as northward towards Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun.
