Internal Challenges Mount for Israel Amid Ongoing Conflict with Hamas

Former Israeli General Highlights Deteriorating Cohesion and Strategic Fragility within Israel's Defense Forces
In a recent article, retired Israeli General Isaac Brik warned of a significant crisis facing Israel more than a year and a half into its military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Brik, who has been vocally critical of Israel's military and political leadership, specifically pointed to an escalating internal threat that is undermining Israeli solidarity and trust in governance.

Brik emphasized that Israel has not achieved the objective of defeating Hamas despite extensive military operations launched over a year ago.

He stated that the military leadership has misled the public regarding the successes of the operation, claiming that only a small fraction of Hamas's tunnel network has been destroyed—approximately 10%—according to his analysis, despite official military statements suggesting a higher figure.

As of late 2023, estimates indicate that Hamas maintains a fighting force of around 30,000 militants, undermining narratives of significant attrition.

Brik criticized the current military leadership, including Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, for failing to be transparent with the public.

He expressed disappointment in the new Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, alleging that his commitments to reform and adapt military strategies have not materialized.

Brik described the ongoing military engagement as a ‘losing war,’ stating that it detracts from the army’s capability to prepare for external threats and does not align with national defense needs.

He identified a range of external threats that Israel faces, including potential military cooperation between Turkey and Syria, Iranian-backed actions along Israel's borders, and an increase in military capabilities of neighboring Egypt.

The analysis presented noted concerns about Israel’s fading international standing, especially in its crucial relationship with the United States.

Public opinion polls indicated declining support for Israel among Americans, a factor that could jeopardize military and financial assistance crucial for Israel’s security.

Brik highlighted a recent incident involving the Israeli government's failure to extend condolences for the passing of Pope Francis, describing the action as an affront to Christians worldwide.

He commented that gestures like this could further alienate key international allies and exacerbate existing tensions.

The article reflected Brik’s belief that without addressing the systemic issues within Israel’s political and security apparatus, the country risks facing greater instability both domestically and internationally.

He emphasized that effective leadership and a strategic overhaul are necessary to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
