Israel's Navy Launches First Seaborne Assault on Yemen's Hodeidah

The Israeli military initiates a naval attack on the Houthi-controlled port city, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
On Tuesday, Israel's navy conducted a seaborne attack on the docks of Hodeidah, a port city in Yemen under the control of Houthi rebels.

This marked Israel's first naval assault against the Iranian-backed group, raising concerns about the potential impact on humanitarian aid to Yemen, a nation already suffering from a severe humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli military's operation targeted facilities that are integral to aid shipments; however, these facilities have been accused of serving dual purposes, including alleged weapons smuggling activities that reportedly evade United Nations inspections.

The strike comes amid ongoing tensions, as the Houthi rebels have been firing missiles towards Israel in response to the conflict involving Hamas in Gaza.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel's military capabilities will extend 'everywhere' and warned the Houthis of the consequences of continued missile attacks against Israel, suggesting further military action could be forthcoming.

Katz indicated that the Houthis would face a robust response and would potentially enter a naval and air blockade.

The coastal city of Hodeidah, situated approximately 90 miles from Yemen's capital, Sana'a, is a strategic location on the Red Sea.

The Israeli military confirmed that missile boats executed the strikes, representing a shift from previous tactics that primarily relied on airstrikes.

Conducting operations at such a distance, over 1,180 miles from Israel, requires extensive logistical support, including aerial refueling.

Despite the attacks, the Houthis have not released any immediate information regarding damage or casualties, and their media outlets did not broadcast any video evidence of the aftermath.

A representative from the Houthi media office downplayed the seriousness of the assault, suggesting it would have little effect on their morale or public support.

The Israeli military asserted that the strikes were necessary to prevent the use of Hodeidah for military purposes and emphasized its designation of the Houthi organization as a terrorist entity that exploits civilian infrastructure to further its military agenda.

Previous military actions by Israel have targeted Yemen's national airline facilities to degrade its operational capabilities.

Hodeidah has historically been a significant entry point for humanitarian aid into Yemen, where millions rely on assistance since the outbreak of civil conflict in 2014. In 2018, a Saudi-led coalition contemplated a military offensive to retake Hodeidah but ultimately opted against it due to fears of exacerbating the humanitarian situation and facing international backlash.

The UN oversees a mission in Hodeidah while additional vessels are monitored by a mission off the coast of Djibouti.

However, recent reports indicate that inspections may not effectively capture all vessels entering Hodeidah.

A UN report cited tips regarding substantial military materials being delivered to the region.

Although Iran has denied direct involvement in arming the Houthis, external analysis has linked weapons found in Houthi possession to Iranian origins.

The Houthis have escalated their missile and drone attacks against both commercial and military maritime vessels in the Red Sea, which has resulted in significant disruptions to trade routes—an estimated £740 billion in goods transit through the corridor annually.

Recent statistics from November 2023 to January 2025 indicated that the group targeted over 100 merchant ships, resulting in two sinkings and the loss of four sailors.

This surge of hostilities decreased the overall flow of commodities in the critical shipping corridor.

In the previous interactions, the Houthis had opted for a self-imposed ceasefire, but provocations resumed following US military actions against the group in mid-March.

The geopolitical ramifications of these ongoing military operations continue to evolve as regional dynamics shift.
