Israeli Military Response to Rocket Attacks from Syria

Israeli Military Response to Rocket Attacks from Syria

Two Grad rockets launched from southern Syria land in Golan Heights, prompting Israeli artillery strikes.
On June 3, 2025, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that two Grad rockets were fired from the Dara area in southern Syria, landing in open territory within the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The military's response included targeted artillery fire aimed at the launch sites in Syria.

The IDF specified that the rockets fell in uninhabited areas, ensuring that no casualties were reported from the incident.

The militant group known as 'Kata’ib al-Shahid Muhammad Daif' claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it served as a retaliatory measure against what they described as Israeli aggressions affecting civilians in Gaza.

This marked the first instance of missile fire across the Syrian border towards the Golan Heights since the regime of Bashar al-Assad effectively collapsed in late 2024.

Following the rocket launch, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant held the Syrian leadership accountable for any acts of aggression, asserting that President Ahmad al-Sharaa is directly responsible for threats against Israel.

Galant emphasized the need for a strong and immediate response to such provocations.

Israeli news outlets indicated that Israeli warplanes subsequently entered Syrian airspace, reportedly breaking the sound barrier in the process, and conducted airstrikes targeting the locations identified as the origin of the rocket fire.

The IDF confirmed that artillery bombardments were focused on areas within Daraa, including the Yarmouk Basin and Saham al-Golan.

These military actions come amid ongoing tensions in the region, exemplified by Israel's routine airstrikes against military targets in Syria.

Israeli officials have constantly cited national security imperatives for these operations, which aim to prevent the transfer of advanced weaponry to Iranian-linked groups operating in Syria.

In a related development, a separate incident saw an incoming missile from Yemen temporarily disrupt operations at Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel, leading to the activation of air raid sirens across multiple cities in the country.

This missile, reportedly intercepted by Israeli defense forces, followed a pattern of escalated regional tensions tied to the ongoing conflicts, particularly involving militant groups such as the Houthis in Yemen, who have voiced their support for the Palestinian factions amid the unfolding crisis in Gaza.

According to the Israeli military, over 139 locations across the country activated air raid alerts as the missile threat was monitored.

As a precautionary measure, flight operations at Ben Gurion were momentarily halted to ensure passenger safety.

The significant increase in security alerts signifies the fragile state of regional stability and the potential for further military confrontations in the future.

The escalation of hostilities, both from Syria and Yemen, has drawn international scrutiny, with calls for de-escalation and renewed dialogue being echoed from various diplomatic quarters.

The Syrian government remains under scrutiny following the recent reestablishment of a new administration, as the drawn-out civil unrest continues to shape the region's security landscape.
