Médecins du Monde Accuses Israel of Violating International Law Amid Ongoing Gaza Conflict

French medical charity condemns drone strikes targeting humanitarian efforts in Gaza, marking a significant escalation in hostilities.
Médecins du Monde, a medical charity based in France, has accused Israel of breaching international law following drone strikes on a building in Gaza that housed its office, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, none of whom were affiliated with the organization.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the charity described the attack as a serious violation of international humanitarian law, which is designed to protect civilian populations and humanitarian organizations operating in zones of conflict.

The strike occurred around 11am local time in Deir al-Balah.

The organization reported that it had previously informed the Israeli military about the location of its office, which had been designated as 'deconflicted'—meaning it was to be shielded from military attacks under established humanitarian coordination agreements.

Médecins du Monde further stated that they received no advance warning before the drone strike, which would have allowed for an evacuation of the premises and protection of those inside.

In a separate development, Israeli military intelligence officers have publicly declared that they will no longer participate in combat operations in Gaza.

This declaration comes amid increasing criticism of the military campaign from within, with a letter signed by 41 officers and reservists being sent to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The group described the military operations as an 'unnecessary, eternal war' and stated that the government was issuing 'clearly illegal' orders.

The letter highlighted concerns regarding the impact of military actions on civilians and suggested that hostages held by Hamas were placed at greater risk following the government's actions.

The officers are members of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)’s intelligence directorate, which has been instrumental in selecting targets throughout the ongoing conflict.

On the humanitarian front, reports indicate that at least 31 individuals were killed by Israeli fire near an aid center while rescue efforts were underway, sparking condemnation from various humanitarian organizations.

Medical officials indicated that many of the casualties were near sites providing essential assistance to the civilian population.

Additionally, the European Union has expressed concern over Israel's intention to revoke a waiver that permits Israeli banks to cooperate with Palestinian banks, a move that could destabilize the already fragile financial infrastructure of the Palestinian territories.

EU officials warned that such actions could lead to the collapse of the Palestinian Authority and further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

As tensions escalate across the region, a convoy consisting of hundreds of activists arrived in Libya after traversing Algeria and Tunisia, aiming to challenge Israel’s blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The convoy, which includes about 1,500 individuals, plans to proceed towards the Rafah crossing into Gaza.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with local health officials reporting a staggering death toll from the ongoing military operations.

The total number of fatalities since the onset of hostilities in October 2023 has reached alarming levels, particularly among vulnerable populations such as women and children.

Concerns over shortage of food and medical supplies have prompted urgent calls for increased humanitarian assistance.

National and international calls for a ceasefire have been amplified amid these escalating tragedies, as civilian populations bear the brunt of the continued conflict.

Amidst the devastation, there have been high-profile cases of individuals, such as a Palestinian doctor who lost most of her family, being evacuated for medical treatment abroad, signaling the severe human toll of the conflict.
