Middle Eastern Nations Urge De-Escalation Following Israeli Strikes on Iran

Regional leaders condemn Israeli attacks and call for diplomatic solutions amid fears of escalating conflict.
Nations across the Middle East have voiced strong condemnation of the recent Israeli airstrikes on Iran, emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation to prevent the potential for a broader conflict.

The Israeli military conducted extensive strikes, reportedly resulting in the deaths of key Iranian military and nuclear officials, as well as targeting various nuclear facilities, marking one of the most significant military operations by Israel against Iran to date.

In response, Iran launched at least 100 drones and ballistic missiles towards Israel, with Israeli military reports indicating that most of these attacks were intercepted.

Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has issued threats of severe retribution against Israel.

The foreign ministries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, excluding Bahrain, have collectively denounced the Israeli strikes, calling for a diplomatic resolution to the escalating tensions.

Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry characterized the Israeli actions as violations of international laws and norms, urging the international community and the United Nations Security Council to intervene to halt the aggression.

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan also reached out to his Iranian counterpart, advocating for a rejection of military force.

Despite historical animosities between many Gulf states and Iran, a full-scale war involving Israel and Iran is deemed contrary to their interests.

The risk of wider regional destabilization is heightened, as intercepted missiles have reportedly fallen into southern Syria, prompting school closures in southern Lebanon and Jordanian military action against drones and missiles.

Iran supports various militias across the region, such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, which could play a significant role in any Iranian defense efforts against Israel.

Iran's defense strategy relies on these proxy groups, which it terms 'strategic depth', positioning them for rapid military response in the event of conflict.

Nevertheless, reports indicate that these Iran-aligned militias are currently exhibiting restrained responses to the recent Israeli attacks.

Hezbollah issued a statement condemning the strikes, yet refrained from initiating any retaliatory measures.

The Houthis acknowledged Iran's right to self-defense but did not call for aggressive action.

The muted reaction from Iran's allied militias contrasts sharply with their previous responses, particularly the coordinated strikes launched in April 2024 when drones and missiles targeted Israel from multiple regional points.

This shift may be reflective of the ongoing ramifications of clashes with Israeli forces and the weakening of some militia capacities due to sustained military operations.

In the United Arab Emirates, Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been actively engaging with regional counterparts, emphasizing the necessity of dialogue and the adherence to international law.

The UAE has articulated strong condemnation of the Israeli military actions and has echoed calls for maintaining regional stability through diplomatic channels.

Meanwhile, historical tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia have underscored the complexities of regional geopolitics.

Although the Arab Gulf states have traditionally viewed Iran with suspicion, the immediate desire for stability has led to unified calls for restraint amidst concerns over a direct military confrontation.

The situation remains fluid, as military actions and diplomatic efforts unfold across the region, with international implications that could impact geopolitical dynamics beyond the Middle East.
