Russia Claims Control Over 12 Localities Amid Increased Hostilities with Ukraine

Russian Defense Ministry asserts territorial gains in Kursk while highlighting simultaneous Ukrainian drone attacks during U.S.-Ukraine negotiations.
The Russian Defense Ministry has announced the control of 12 localities in the Kursk region, claiming the liberation of an area of 100 square kilometers within a single day.

Reports indicate that Russian forces have taken significant portions of the city of Sudzha in Kursk.

General Valery Gerasimov, the head of the Russian Armed Forces, was reported to have inspected his troops in Kursk, overseeing operations aimed at eliminating Ukrainian formations that have reportedly penetrated the area.

The Russian defense statement included details regarding Gerasimov hearing progress reports from the commander of the Kursk group regarding current combat operations.

In a related statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry asserted that Ukraine has strategically timed its largest drone attack on Moscow and its surroundings to coincide with ongoing negotiations between the United States and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia.

The attack, described as unprecedented, reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals at a meat warehouse and left 17 others injured.

The drone strikes also caused temporary shutdowns of the four airports in the capital.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that out of 343 drones, 91 were intercepted over the Moscow region, 126 over Kursk where Ukrainian forces are retreating, and other interceptions occurred near the Kursk Nuclear Power Station.

Photos released on Russian platforms depicted damage to a residential building and a rural home in the Vidnoe suburb, as well as a fire in a parking area in Domodedovo.

In a counteraction, the Ukrainian Air Force reported successfully intercepting a Russian Iskander-M ballistic missile and downing 79 out of 126 drones that targeted several Ukrainian regions the previous day.

The regions of Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Kyiv, and Odesa sustained extensive damage from these attacks.

The military administration in Odesa confirmed that multiple facilities faced significant drone strikes, resulting in large fires within the city.

Damage to residential buildings in Kyiv was also reported, with debris from intercepted drones causing harm before they could reach their targets.

In parallel, the Kremlin stated that even if Western supplies to Ukraine were to cease, the country would still possess substantial quantities of weaponry.

The Kremlin emphasized the need for preparedness despite some perceptions suggesting overconfidence regarding U.S. support for Ukraine.

Since the commencement of the military campaign on February 24, 2022, Russia has maintained that it will continue its operations until Ukraine renounces aspirations to join military alliances with the West, a condition that Ukraine views as an infringement on its sovereignty.
