Former President Donald Trump threatens military action if Iran attacks, following Israeli strikes on Iranian sites.
WASHINGTON:
Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran on Sunday, stating that the country would face "the full strength" of the US military should it launch any attacks against the United States.
This warning was reiterated on his Truth Social platform, where Trump emphasized that the US "had nothing to do" with Israel’s recent military operations aimed at Iranian nuclear and military facilities.
The Israeli operation, which commenced early Friday, reportedly targeted key Iranian sites, resulting in casualties that include high-ranking army commanders and nuclear scientists, according to sources from Tehran.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly committed to strike "every target of the ayatollah regime," in response to perceived threats from Iran.
In retaliation, Iran has reportedly launched a series of missile attacks.
Trump's comments come in the context of heightened military activity in the region, as tensions between Israel and Iran escalate.
He affirmed his prior knowledge of the Israeli actions before they took place and reiterated that any American attack would be unprecedented in scale.
"If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before," he stated.
Additionally, Trump expressed his belief that diplomatic negotiations could be feasible, suggesting that a deal could be arranged between Iran and Israel to halt the ongoing conflict: "We can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!"
Earlier in the week, President
Joe Biden urged Tehran to pursue negotiations or risk facing even more severe retaliatory measures from Israel.
The backdrop to these developments includes the 2018 US withdrawal from a significant nuclear agreement with Iran, a move made by Trump during his presidency, which led to the reimposition of sanctions against Tehran.
