Discussions in Saudi Arabia yield significant advances towards a potential 30-day ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Ukraine announced that its talks with the United States, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, made important strides toward achieving lasting peace.
The Ukrainian presidency expressed willingness to accept a temporary ceasefire proposal from the U.S. for an initial period of 30 days, stating that the ceasefire could be extended upon mutual agreement and should be simultaneously accepted and enforced by Russia.
The U.S. intends to inform Moscow that reciprocal treatment from Russia is key to achieving peace.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed the need for Washington to 'convince' Moscow to accept the ceasefire proposal discussed during the U.S.-Ukrainian talks in Jeddah.
In his daily address via social media, Zelensky remarked that Ukraine views the ceasefire proposal positively.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that it is now up to Russia to decide whether it will accept the ceasefire, noting that Ukraine is prepared for negotiations.
Following over eight hours of discussions in Jeddah, Rubio conveyed optimism, stating, 'The ball is now in their court.'
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz expressed hope for an end to the war in Ukraine, following Kyiv's acceptance of the 30-day ceasefire proposal and immediate negotiations.
Waltz noted the shift in dialogue from whether the war would end to how it could be concluded, adding that former President
Donald Trump has 'moved the entire global dialogue forward.'
The U.S. and Ukrainian delegations engaged in constructive discussions in Jeddah, attended by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and State Minister Musaad Al-Aiban.
The U.S. delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, while Ukraine was represented by the Head of the President's Office Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, and Defense Minister Rustem Umierov.
Sources indicated a positive atmosphere throughout the talks between the two sides.
Andriy Yermak described the talks as a 'constructive beginning' to discussions aimed at resolving the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.
He posted on Telegram, alongside photographs from the meeting, expressing a commitment to achieving a fair and lasting peace after three years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The discussions come as former U.S. President
Donald Trump ramps up pressure on Kyiv to end the conflict that began with Russia's invasion in 2022. Kyiv hopes that the partial ceasefire proposal will encourage Washington to resume military aid, intelligence sharing, and access to satellite imagery, which had been suspended following a contentious episode between Trump and Zelensky in the White House.
According to the Ukrainian presidency, the U.S. will immediately lift the temporary halt on intelligence sharing and resume military assistance to Ukraine.
Additionally, both delegations discussed the importance of humanitarian relief efforts as part of the peace process, especially during the proposed ceasefire, which includes prisoner exchanges, the release of detained civilians, and the repatriation of forcibly relocated Ukrainian children.
The delegations agreed to designate their teams and initiate talks aimed at achieving lasting peace that ensures Ukraine's long-term security.
The U.S. committed to discussing these proposals with representatives from Russia, as stated by the Ukrainian presidency.
The Ukrainian delegation affirmed that European partners will also be involved in the peace process.
Economically, the Ukrainian presidency noted that both countries agreed to expedite a comprehensive agreement aimed at developing vital mineral resources in Ukraine 'to boost its economy and offset the costs of U.S. aid, ensuring Ukraine's prosperity and security in the long term.'
President Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine’s position in these talks will be fully constructive, following his meetings with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which he referred to as a 'notable meeting,' commending the Crown Prince's efforts to enhance the chances of achieving real peace.
Former U.S. military advisor Abbas Dahuk remarked that these high-level meetings could play a crucial role in restoring trust and enhancing diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Ukraine.
He indicated that these discussions provided an opportunity to clarify ambiguities, unify strategic priorities, and highlight common goals in the face of continuing Russian aggression.
Dahuk added that the success of these talks will depend on tangible political commitments and the ability of both sides to address frustrations arising from delays in military assistance and intelligence sharing or political shifts in Washington.
He pointed out that any breakthrough in diplomatic negotiations relies on Russia's willingness to negotiate regarding the return of occupied territories, as well as Ukraine's strategic objectives related to its wider relationship with Europe and NATO.
