U.S. Urges Several Countries to Host Palestinians Leaving Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict

American officials discuss voluntary relocation of Palestinians fleeing Israeli attacks as humanitarian situation deteriorates.
On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States has been in contact with multiple countries to encourage them to accept Palestinians who have decided to leave Gaza of their own accord, fleeing the ongoing Israeli military operations in the region.

These developments come amid an intensifying humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has seen widespread displacement since the conflict escalated after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Israeli forces have issued renewed warnings to the residents of Gaza, who have been entirely uprooted from their homes due to months of conflict and siege.

The situation has raised concerns about access to essential resources, compounding the urgency for a humanitarian response.

In a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Rubio emphasized the importance of ensuring that any relocation efforts are voluntary, stating, "There will be no forced relocations." He distinguished between individuals who may choose to leave for health care or educational needs and the broader context of the conflict-induced displacement.

Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley questioned the notion of a voluntary choice under dire circumstances, highlighting the lack of clean water, food shortages, and constant bombardment in Gaza.

Merkley’s comments reflect growing concerns within U.S. political circles regarding the humanitarian implications of such a policy.

While Rubio did not specify which countries were being approached to host Palestinian families, he explicitly ruled out Libya as a potential destination.

His comments follow recent reports suggesting plans discussed under the Trump administration to permanently relocate as many as one million Palestinians from Gaza to Libya.

Rubio also acknowledged the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza after an extensive period of blockade, stating, "We are pleased to see aid coming back into the Gaza Strip." However, he faced criticism from lawmakers over the scale of the assistance being provided, with one senator arguing that the 100 truckloads of aid were wholly inadequate given the pressing threat of famine in the area.

Rubio responded that while he understood the concerns about the volumes of aid, he was nonetheless satisfied with the decision to allow humanitarian relief into the region.
