UAE Embarks on Pioneering Genetic Testing Initiative in Marriage

Mandatory genetic screening set for 2025 aims to safeguard future generations from inherited diseases
The United Arab Emirates is set to incorporate genetic testing into mandatory pre-marital screenings for Emirati couples starting January 2025, marking a significant shift in public health policy aimed at mitigating the transmission of inherited diseases to future generations.

Announced by Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary at the Abu Dhabi Department of Health during the UAE Government Annual Meetings, this new mandate will evaluate 570 genes for over 840 genetic disorders.

The initiative underlines the proactive efforts of the Emirates Genome Programme to avert conditions that can affect offspring, such as developmental delays, organ failure, and severe seizures.

By identifying shared genetic mutations in prospective parents through this requirement, the UAE positions itself at the forefront of preventative healthcare, empowering couples to make informed family planning decisions.

This transformational approach intends to furnish a healthier future for the Emirati community, allowing genetic anomalies that could escalate into preventable ailments to be addressed well in advance.

Dr. Al Ghaithi advocates for individuals preparing to marry to utilize the genetic test, with results expected within a fortnight.

Contributing to this initiative is the ambitious Emirates Genome Programme, which aims to scale up to a million genomic samples, making it one of the largest population genome databases globally.

At present, over 650,000 samples have been collected, contributing valuable insights into the genetic landscape of the UAE.

Recent data from the Programme have uncovered significant findings—12 per cent of new genetic variants were identified, with important implications such as 25 per cent of Emiratis carrying resilience genes to psychological stressors, and 46 per cent exhibiting genetic traits that aid in lactose digestion.

However, a pressing concern revealed is that 20 per cent of future Emiratis might be predisposed to Type 1 diabetes, directing future preventive healthcare measures.

Beyond testing, the initiative solidifies the UAE’s investment in genomic research and education.

Collaborations with prestigious institutions like Harvard Medical School have birthed clinical genomics training programs, graduating 100 Emirati doctors, thereby fortifying the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.

Since its inception in 2021, the Emirates Genome Council has championed advancements in regional genomic research.

Its establishment of the UAE Reference Genome Platform consolidates genetic information from over 140,000 Emiratis, facilitating breakthroughs in personalized medicine and disease prevention.

This strategic endeavor, including the groundbreaking discovery of over 5.2 million genetic variants in the Arab region, reinforces the UAE’s commitment to harnessing genomic data for public health benefits, aiming to enhance personalized healthcare solutions across the nation and serve as a model of proactive genetic healthcare globally.
