Israel and Lebanon Extend Ceasefire by 45 Days Following Washington Talks

Israel and Lebanon Extend Ceasefire by 45 Days Following Washington Talks

The two countries have agreed to a 45-day extension of the ceasefire that has curtailed conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
May 15, 2026 - Israel and Lebanon have mutually consented to a 45-day extension of their current ceasefire, following high-level diplomatic discussions facilitated by Washington.

These talks concluded on Friday with an agreement for further meetings in the coming weeks.

The original ceasefire, which took effect on April 16th, was due to expire this Sunday.

The State Department's spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, announced the agreement via X, stating that the extension is aimed at fostering additional progress.

The negotiations have been described as 'highly productive,' and both Lebanese and Israeli delegations expressed positive assessments of these discussions.

These are the third round of talks since tensions escalated on March 2nd when Hezbollah fired missiles towards Israel, prompting an intensification of air strikes and a ground invasion by Israel into southern Lebanon.

Approximately 1.2 million people were displaced as a result. The US-led mediation efforts have parallels with diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the broader conflict between the United States and Iran.

Ending hostilities in Lebanon has been identified by Iran as one of its prerequisites for a wider peace agreement.

Lebanon's delegation, despite objections from Hezbollah, has prioritized achieving a cessation in hostilities during these talks.

Israel maintains that any lasting peace must involve the disarmament of Hezbollah. The Washington meetings have seen the inclusion of security and military officials, with the Pentagon set to convene both sides for a new 'security track' on May 29th, while further political negotiations are scheduled for June 2nd-3rd.

The State Department aims to advance peace, mutual sovereignty recognition, and secure borders between the two countries.Lebanon's delegation expressed hope that this ceasefire extension could lead to lasting stability and reinforce state institutions.

The Israeli ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, described these talks as 'frank and constructive,' emphasizing the importance of security throughout the negotiation process.
