Indian PM Modi Urges 'Open and Safe' Hormuz During UAE Visit

Indian PM Modi Urges 'Open and Safe' Hormuz During UAE Visit

Modi's visit to the UAE, part of a five-nation tour, focuses on energy security amid Iran conflict concerns.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for an 'open and safe' Strait of Hormuz during his visit to the UAE on Friday.

This marked the beginning of a five-nation tour that is particularly sensitive due to ongoing energy and supply-chain worries stemming from the conflict in Iran.

Modi, who was accompanied by a military jet escort into UAE airspace, received a guard of honor and met with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan before continuing his journey to the Netherlands.

He referred to the UAE as his 'second home,' emphasizing his frequent visits to this country that hosts 4.5 million Indians. The current disruptions to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz have significantly impacted oil and gas markets, especially for energy importers such as India.

In response to these pressures, India was forced to raise its petrol and diesel prices on Friday.

Modi highlighted the critical importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz free, open, and safe, emphasizing that adherence to international laws in this matter is essential.During his visit, agreements were reached between India and the UAE to increase oil storage capacity at ADNOC's facilities in India up to 30 million barrels.

Additionally, crude storage at the UAE's Fujairah port will serve as part of India’s strategic reserve.

These arrangements aim to bolster India's energy security, particularly given its reliance on the Strait of Hormuz for half of its crude imports, which have been largely blocked by Iran since late February.Modi's six-day tour includes stops in Sweden, Norway, and Italy, reflecting India's broader strategy to diversify economic and strategic partnerships.

This effort positions India as a major manufacturing and technology hub.

Notably, this visit follows the recent free trade agreement between India and the European Union (EU), which is seen as a significant opportunity for India, the world’s most populous nation.Modi is scheduled to attend a Nordic summit in Oslo, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Norway in 43 years.

This increased engagement with Northern Europe demonstrates India's strategic aim of becoming a trusted economic and clean energy partner in a rapidly changing global order.

The momentum generated by the recently concluded India-EU free trade agreement is expected to further enhance these relations.
