LEGO Foundation Commits $97 Million to Education in Conflict Zones

LEGO Foundation Commits $97 Million to Education in Conflict Zones

The LEGO Foundation partners with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to support play-based learning for children in East Africa and the Middle East.
The LEGO Foundation, a corporate foundation focused on early childhood development, has committed $97 million over five years to expand programs by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) that utilize play as a method of education and recovery for children affected by conflict.

This initiative aims to reach 5 million children across East Africa and the Middle East.

The partnership, announced on Wednesday, is designed to address the often-overlooked educational needs of children in crisis situations.

David Miliband, President of IRC, highlighted the importance of reclaiming childhood for children born into conflict by providing them with opportunities for education and play.

The LEGO Foundation's CEO, Sidsel Marie Kristensen, emphasized the agile nature of their funding approach, which is tailored to respond quickly to changing conflict zones.

Currently, the program, called PlayMatters, offers training to teachers in countries such as Ethiopia, Lebanon, Palestine, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Uganda.

The program focuses on integrating 'playful learning' into classroom instruction, helping educators tailor their teaching methods to address the unique needs of children traumatized by crisis.

A key component of PlayMatters is its flexibility in delivering educational content, such as using radio shows to teach children about emotions through culturally familiar characters and episodes offered in multiple languages.

The LEGO Foundation's funding allows the IRC to adapt quickly to changing circumstances, including rapidly shifting class sizes and emergent needs for sanitation and nutrition.

This partnership is an extension of previous collaboration between the LEGO Foundation and IRC, which began in 2019 with a $100 million commitment to 'Ahlan Simsim,' a program supporting children affected by the Syrian and Rohingya refugee crises.

Kristensen has called for greater collaboration among governments, civil society, and the private sector to support educational initiatives.

The importance of early childhood education is underscored by its role in mitigating the effects of toxic stress on brain development and learning.

Before recent cuts in international aid budgets, particularly from wealthier nations like the United States, education was often underfunded within humanitarian responses.

Patty McIlreavy, president and CEO of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, highlighted the announcement as an example of how donors can make meaningful contributions to complex conflicts even when outcomes are uncertain.

The LEGO Foundation's commitment is seen as a significant step towards addressing educational disparities among children in conflict zones, emphasizing that education is not merely a 'life-sustaining' effort but a crucial part of recovery and resilience building.
