Saudi National Center for Wildlife Launches Professional Ranger Training Standard to Strengthen Conservation Capacity
New competency-based programme aims to elevate ranger skills and professionalism in managing protected areas across the Kingdom
Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Wildlife has unveiled a new professional training standard for rangers designed to bolster the Kingdom’s capacity to protect its natural heritage and manage protected areas effectively.
The National Professional Standard for Rangers was launched at a workshop titled “National Professional Standard for Rangers: Aspiration and Empowerment,” attended by senior officials, conservation experts and international representatives, signalling a major step in formalising and professionalising wildlife ranger roles.
Under the patronage of the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, who also serves as chairman of the National Center for Wildlife, the standard was developed through extensive analysis and benchmarking against international ranger competencies.
It draws on global best practices and is tailored to Saudi Arabia’s unique environmental landscape, reflecting the evolving demands of conservation and biodiversity protection in the region.
The programme adopts a competency-based methodology that clearly defines ranger tasks and responsibilities, emphasising field skills, wildlife monitoring, law enforcement support and community engagement.
By aligning domestic ranger standards with those of the International Ranger Federation, the initiative seeks to ensure consistency and high performance across all protected areas, enhancing both national capacity and regional leadership in conservation.
Officials highlighted that the training standard supports broader strategic goals to safeguard habitats, monitor species and enforce regulations against illegal activities that threaten biodiversity.
By providing structured, accredited training and professional benchmarks, the initiative aims to empower rangers with the skills needed to address contemporary environmental challenges, including illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.
