UN Security Council Urges Peaceful Settlement of Disputes Amid Global Conflicts

UN Security Council Urges Peaceful Settlement of Disputes Amid Global Conflicts

The UN chief highlights the urgent need for global peace efforts as conflicts escalate in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Haiti, and Myanmar.
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a Pakistan-drafted resolution urging all 193 member nations to use all possible means to settle disputes peacefully.

This call comes amid escalating conflicts globally, with particular attention drawn to the 'horror show in Gaza' by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

In his address to the council, Guterres emphasized the global disregard for international law and the UN Charter, particularly in light of widening geopolitical divides.

He noted that in Gaza, starvation is a looming threat due to Israel's restrictions on aid delivery, hindering the United Nations' efforts to provide essential assistance to Palestinians.

The resolution calls upon all countries to employ methods outlined in the UN Charter to resolve disputes peacefully, including negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

This plea comes as hunger and displacement reach record levels worldwide, with security further jeopardized by terrorism, extremism, and transnational crime.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired the meeting, underscoring the urgent need to address longstanding conflicts such as those between Pakistan and India over Kashmir and in Gaza.

He highlighted a crisis of multilateralism, emphasizing the importance of revitalizing trust in the UN system based on adherence to international law rather than geopolitical expediency.

The United States reaffirmed its support for the UN's founding principles, including peaceful dispute resolution.

The US has recently facilitated de-escalation efforts between several countries and calls upon all involved in conflicts, particularly those like Ukraine and China, to follow suit.
