The European Union is seeking ways to pressure Israel into improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, its top diplomat stated.
KUALA LUMPUR: The European Union (EU) is actively pursuing measures to compel Israel to enhance the humanitarian condition in Gaza.
According to the EU's top diplomat, the bloc is considering various political actions against Israel due to concerns over potential human rights violations within the context of their association agreement.
The EU's diplomatic service has proposed ten options for such political action, ranging from suspending trade relations and economic agreements to more limited measures such as halting technical cooperation projects.
These steps are in response to member states that have called for increased pressure on Israel to address the deteriorating situation affecting civilians in Gaza, particularly amid an ongoing 21-month-long conflict.
The EU's foreign policy chief emphasized that these proposed actions aim not at punishing Israel but rather at improving the humanitarian circumstances within the enclave.
She highlighted a recent agreement with Israel to expand access for humanitarian aid, including increased numbers of aid trucks and more crossing points designated for such purposes.
Concerns about civilian casualties and displacement have prompted EU members to voice their concerns over the situation in Gaza.
The diplomatic efforts also extend to ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, which are affected by potential tariffs imposed by US President
Donald Trump.
The EU has expressed its intention not to engage in retaliatory measures but reserves the right to respond to any escalation of tensions.
The evolving geopolitical landscape, including global economic uncertainties and trade tensions, particularly concerning the EU's relationship with major trading partners, continues to shape discussions around international diplomacy and economic cooperation.
