France's Pledge to Recognize State of Palestine Met with Support from Hamas and Former UK Diplomats

French President Emmanuel Macron's announcement to formally recognize the State of Palestine in September has been welcomed by Hamas, while more than 30 former UK ambassadors and 20 former senior diplomats at the UN have urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take a similar step.
GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Islamist militant group Hamas hailed France's pledge on Thursday to recognize a State of Palestine as a "positive step" and urged all countries to do the same despite Israeli opposition.

The announcement came from French President Emmanuel Macron, who stated that France would formally state its recognition in September.

In response, Hamas issued a statement expressing appreciation for this move towards supporting the Palestinian people's rights.

They called on other countries, particularly European nations, to follow suit. The sentiment among international diplomats is similarly supportive.

More than 30 former UK ambassadors and 20 former senior diplomats at the UN have also chimed in, urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to recognize a Palestinian state.

Their statement emphasized that this move would be significant for breaking a "deadly status quo" and urged action over words, advocating for more substantial pressure on Israel if it fails to engage constructively on the issue. The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire.

With a population of 2 million residents, the Strip has been particularly affected by Israeli attacks and restrictions on aid, leading to widespread concerns about starvation.

This crisis underscores the urgency for political settlement and recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The statement from former UK diplomats criticized current approaches as insufficient and called for stronger measures to address ongoing violations.
