Lebanese President Stresses Unity, Arab Support Amid Regional Tensions

Aoun urges national cohesion to withstand external threats while pledging to avoid future wars.
In a call for unity amidst mounting regional tensions and diplomatic shifts, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun emphasized the necessity of national cohesion and Arab cooperation as pivotal to Lebanon's recovery.

Speaking to a delegation of Sunni religious leaders at the Republican Palace in Beirut, Aoun urged Lebanese leaders to reject divisions and foreign interference, advocating for leveraging regional support to rebuild the nation.Aoun criticized what he termed historical "fatal errors" by past governments seeking external backing against domestic adversaries.

He linked this strategy to the devastating consequences Lebanon has endured, advocating instead for bolstering partnerships with internal allies as a countermeasure to external threats.

His remarks touched upon Israel's divide-and-conquer tactics, positioning internal unity as Lebanon's strategic response. The president dismissed concerns over potential warfare, assuring that "Lebanon is secure" and vowing to eschew rhetoric that could lead to renewed conflict.

He framed the country's future within a framework of stability and prosperity, rooted in self-reliance rather than external intervention.Aoun's address came on the heels of diplomatic efforts, notably Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa's announcement of plans for a permanent diplomatic mission in Beirut following talks with Aoun.

The president hailed this move as evidence of Arab nations extending hands of support to Lebanon, urging his audience to capitalize on these opportunities and transform the country's circumstances.Aoun also highlighted interfaith cooperation, particularly between Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian and Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Aql Sami Abi Al-Mona, in preventing regional tensions from destabilizing Lebanon.

He acknowledged significant progress in governmental reforms, attributing this to international observers' recognition, while acknowledging that quick fixes remain elusive.Mufti Derian expressed deep concern over prevailing fear and anxiety among the Lebanese populace, urging international accountability for UN Resolution 1701's implementation, which brought an end to the 2006 war with Israel.

He called for Lebanon's Arab neighbors to respect their obligations under this resolution and warned against new agreements that fail to address these commitments fully.Emphasizing resilience in the face of crisis, Derian reaffirmed support for Aoun's leadership, emphasizing the need for a robust state presence to protect its citizens.

He underscored the importance of moderation within Lebanon's diverse communities, calling for cooperation amid uncertainty and growing Israeli aggression. The article concludes with the discussion on international pressure to implement disarmament plans and the Lebanese government's efforts to maintain internal stability through security operations along the Syrian border.

The arrest of 78 Syrians at checkpoints highlights ongoing tensions in cross-border activities.

Overall, the piece underscores Lebanon's strategic pivot towards unity and regional support amidst geopolitical complexities.
