LONDON: US Special Envoy Tom Barrack has sought to clarify recent comments made during his visit to the region, emphasizing that his praise for Syria’s advancements was not meant as a threat to its neighbor, Lebanon.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, Barrack clarified, "My comments yesterday praised Syria's impressive strides, not a threat to Lebanon." He continued by highlighting the positive developments in Syria, noting increased investments from Turkey and Gulf countries, diplomatic outreach, and a clear vision for the future.

Barrack reassured that Syrian leaders aim for coexistence and mutual prosperity with Lebanon, while the US remains committed to supporting their bilateral relationship based on peace and shared prosperity.

The clarification came in response to reports in Lebanese media suggesting that Barrack had issued a warning about Lebanon potentially falling under renewed Syrian influence if it failed to align with regional dynamics.

This sentiment was conveyed through concerns over Lebanon's sovereignty and fears of outside interference, particularly regarding the historically sensitive term "Bilad Al-Sham".
