Drone Strikes Disrupt Oil Production in Iraq's Kurdistan Region

Infrastructure Damage Halts Operations at Multiple Oilfields Following String of Drone Attacks
Several oilfields in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region have suspended production due to significant damage inflicted on field infrastructure by a series of drone attacks.

The regional government reported these incidents, though the responsible party remains unidentified and no group has claimed responsibility for the assaults.

Gulf Keystone Petroleum (GKP) took the precautionary measure of halting operations at the Shaikan oilfield, considered one of the largest in the region.

GKP, which holds an 80 percent working interest through its production-sharing contract with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), stated that while their assets were not directly impacted, safety measures led to the temporary cessation of production.

The attacks targeted multiple fields, including Tawke, Peshkabour, and Ain Sifni in the independent administration of Zakho and Shekhan district within Duhok province.

The Kurdistan Regional Ministry of Natural Resources emphasized that these strikes were aimed at undermining the region's economic infrastructure and endangering energy sector workers.

DNO, a Norwegian oil and gas firm operating Tawke and Peshkir oilfields near the Turkish border, also suspended operations following explosions with no reported casualties.

DNO is currently assessing damage and expects to resume production once completed.

Ain Sifni oilfield, operated by US-based Hunt Oil, was similarly targeted in northern Iraq's Dohuk region, though further details regarding this incident remain limited.

The string of attacks has raised concerns about potential links to Iran-backed militias, with initial investigations suggesting that the drones may have originated from areas controlled by these groups.

Additionally, a prior drone strike on Monday caused damage to water pipes at Khurmala oilfield near Irbil, sparking fears regarding the safety and stability of Iraq's energy infrastructure.
