BAGHDAD: Iraq’s newly elected president, Nizar Amede, has nominated businessman Ali Al-Zaidi as the country's prime minister-designate on Monday.
This nomination comes after the Coordination Framework, an alliance of Shia factions with varying links to Iran, endorsed Zaidi as its candidate.
The announcement followed an ultimatum by US President
Donald Trump that threatened to halt all support for Iraq if Nouri Al-Maliki, a powerbroker with close ties to Iran, were to return to power.
This decision reshuffled the political landscape in Iraq, which has long navigated between the competing influences of its allies, neighboring Iran, and its archfoe, the United States.
The nomination by the largest Shiite bloc is seen as a decisive step towards securing Zaidi's position through presidential appointment.
Despite his relatively low profile in political circles, Zaidi is perceived as a compromise figure.
His background includes being a businessman, banker, and owner of a television channel, with no previous government experience.
