Azzam Al-Hayya, son of Hamas' chief negotiator in talks over Gaza's future, dies after Israeli strike.
Cairo: An Israeli air strike has killed the son of Hamas’ chief negotiator in US-mediated talks over Gaza’s future, a senior Hamas official said on Thursday.
Azzam Al-Hayya, son of Khalil Al-Hayya, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday after being struck in an Israeli attack on Wednesday night, according to Basim Naim, a senior Hamas official. This incident marks the fourth time one of Hamas’ exiled Gaza chief’s sons has been killed by Israeli attacks.
Hayya, who has seven children, has survived multiple attempts by Israel to target him.
In Doha last year, an Israeli strike targeting Hamas leadership killed one of his sons, while two others were killed in strikes on Gaza in 2008 and 2014.Hayya accused Israel of trying to undermine mediators’ efforts to move forward with US President
Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, overseen by the so-called Board of Peace.
These attacks indicate that Israel does not want to abide by a ceasefire or the first phase of the agreement, according to Hayya. The violence comes amid ongoing talks in Cairo between Hamas leaders and regional mediators, as well as Nickolay Mladenov, the lead envoy for Trump’s Gaza plan.
The plan involves Israeli troops withdrawing from Gaza and reconstruction beginning as Hamas lays down its weapons.
However, Hamas’ disarmament remains a contentious issue in discussions to implement the second phase of the deal and solidify an October ceasefire that ended two years of war.Since the ceasefire took effect, at least 830 Palestinians have been killed, according to local medics.
Israel claims that militants have killed four of its soldiers over the same period.
Israeli strikes aim to prevent Hamas and other Palestinian groups from staging attacks against their forces.
