Israeli Drone Strikes Kill Four in Lebanon, Southern Airstrikes Claim at Least 13 Lives

Three drone strikes near Beirut and a series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon result in casualties, highlighting ongoing tensions since the ceasefire with Hezbollah.
In a significant escalation of hostilities following a ceasefire that went into effect on April 17th, Israeli drone strikes south of Beirut on Saturday resulted in the deaths of four individuals.

Additionally, several airstrikes targeting areas in southern Lebanon have claimed at least 13 lives, including a father and his 12-year-old daughter, according to state media and the Health Ministry. The strikes near Beirut mark the first such incidents since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was established.

Israeli authorities claim they targeted a senior Hezbollah military official in an airstrike on Wednesday night in a southern suburb of the city.

Despite the ongoing truce, both sides have continued their daily attacks with increased intensity. On Saturday alone, two strikes occurred on the highway connecting Beirut to Sidon, causing multiple injuries, while a third struck a road leading towards the Chouf region, resulting in three fatalities, as reported by the National News Agency.

An eyewitness at the scene near Saadiyat confirmed the presence of a dead body following one of the attacks. The Health Ministry provided further details on the strikes in southern Lebanon, noting that an airstrike in Saksakiyeh killed seven individuals and wounded 15 more, with initial reports suggesting these casualties included children.

Separate strikes were also reported in Bourj Rahhal and Maifadoun, leading to additional fatalities. In another tragic incident, three Israeli drone strikes targeted a Syrian man and his daughter in Nabatiyeh, ultimately leading to the death of both individuals.

The daughter attempted to escape but was subsequently struck again while trying to move away from the initial impact site.

Her death in a hospital underscored the brutality of the attack. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health condemned these actions, denouncing them as violations of International Humanitarian Law and highlighting the deliberate targeting of civilians and children.

They emphasize that such attacks constitute ongoing grave breaches of international law, reflecting the dire humanitarian situation. In response to Hezbollah’s activities, including the launch of explosive drones into Israel near the Lebanese border, causing injuries to three Israeli soldiers, the Israeli military has acknowledged multiple incidents of drone activity within Lebanon as well.

While no casualties were reported from the strikes on Israeli vehicles, these events highlight the precariousness of the situation along the Israeli-Lebanese border. This conflict stems from a broader regional context that began with hostilities initiated by Hezbollah in March 2023.

The ensuing war has seen Israel carry out extensive airstrikes and launch ground invasions into southern Lebanon.

Subsequently, direct talks between Lebanon and Israel, which have been technically at war since the establishment of Israel in 1948, were held for the first time in decades.Efforts to de-escalate tensions led to a 10-day ceasefire starting on April 17th, later extended by three weeks.

Amid these developments, discussions regarding strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing security cooperation between Lebanon and Syria have been initiated, reflecting a shared concern over regional conflicts and an intent to prevent the misuse of either nation for harming neighboring countries, particularly Syria in light of its ongoing civil war.
