Surfers in War-Torn Gaza Find Rare Moments of Joy

Despite the ongoing crisis and restrictions imposed by Israel, a small group of Palestinian surfers continues to find solace and relief surfing the Mediterranean waves off the coast of Gaza.
DEIR AL-BALAH: In the midst of the dire humanitarian situation across the Gaza Strip, where a fragile ceasefire remains in place, a small number of Palestinian surfers have discovered moments of joy riding the waves along the territory's Mediterranean coastline.

The practice is not only an escape from the turmoil but also a testament to resilience and hope amidst adversity.Tahseen Abu Assi, a surfer based in Gaza City, reflects on the significance of surfing during displacement.

He carried his surfboard throughout the challenges of the two-year war, understanding its irreplaceable value amid the scarcity of such equipment since 2007.

Surfboards, along with other sports gear and products, have been banned by Israel, presenting a significant obstacle for enthusiasts. On Tuesday, Abu Assi joined three fellow surfers at sea off the Gaza City port, including Khalil Abu Jiab, who rode the waves with an outstretched arm, expressing pure joy.

The Israeli military has heavily restricted sea activities in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict, leading to attacks on fishermen, both onshore and at sea, as reported by the United Nations.

Last year, Israel declared certain areas around Gaza off-limits for fishing, swimming, and other sea activities, complicating surfing efforts. The waters surrounding northern and southern Gaza are prohibited for fishing and swimming due to safety concerns, while entering the waters near central Gaza is risky given the presence of Israeli patrols.

Despite these risks and limitations, surfers remain committed to their sport.

During intense conflicts, they even found ways to practice on the rare occasions when waves were high enough for surfing. The fragile ceasefire since October 10 has not entirely eased tensions, with both Hamas and Israel accusing each other of violating the agreement.

According to figures from Gaza's Health Ministry, Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in significant loss of life and injury, highlighting ongoing struggles for Palestinians to access basic necessities including food, clean water, medical care, and shelter following widespread destruction and dismantled healthcare infrastructure. For surfers like Tahseen Abu Assi, the ocean offers fleeting moments of relief.

He emphasizes that when the sea rises high enough, work can be put aside in pursuit of this sport, offering a temporary escape from life's burdens.

These acts of finding joy amidst adversity are rare but not lost on those who witness them.
