How Strait of Hormuz Crisis Disrupts Global Sugar Supplies

Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz impact the supply chain for sugar, leading to potential shortages in global markets.
LONDON: The ongoing tensions and disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are having a significant impact on global sugar supplies.

With oil prices surging and ethanol margins climbing, Brazilian mill operators are shifting their focus towards producing more ethanol at the expense of sugar production.

Brazil is the world's largest supplier of sugar, accounting for roughly 45 percent of international sugar trade, and this shift in production could lead to a decrease in global sugar availability.

The situation is further complicated by the ongoing conflict and blockade, which have pushed oil prices steadily around $100 a barrel.

This has increased the incentive for Brazilian mills to divert cane towards ethanol production, leading to less sugar reaching global markets.

The collapse of talks and extension of a fragile ceasefire has exacerbated the crisis, with no immediate resolution in sight.

The impact of these disruptions is being felt across the globe.

Raw sugar futures on ICE have risen as traders focus on the energy-driven supply squeeze.

However, prices remain lower than they were before the conflict began, reflecting the depressed state of the market.

The global production surplus, estimated at 11-12 million tons, acts as a ceiling on any potential price rally.

Furthermore, the Arab region, which is a major consumer and re-export hub for sugar, is facing its own set of challenges.

The disruption caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatens both the supply chain and demand for sugar.

Six Middle Eastern and North African countries are among the world's top 30 sugar importers, with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Algeria, and Egypt being major players in the market.

The alternative ports of Fujairah, Khorfakkan, and Sohar in the UAE offer a workaround for the disruption but lack the capacity of Jebel Ali port, which is the world's largest standalone sugar refinery.

The responsibility for navigating these complexities falls largely on the trading companies and importers themselves, as most Brazilian exports are sold on FOB terms.

In this volatile market, analysts have raised concerns about the impact of an El Niño weather pattern on sugarcane production in Southeast Asia and India.

This could further exacerbate potential shortages in global sugar supplies if the current disruptions persist.

The outcome will depend largely on the operational capacity and creativity of trading companies involved.

As the market grapples with this new reality, the difference between disruption and shortage will be determined by how long the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and its effects on the global sugar trade.
