Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump engaged in a phone call where they discussed potential solutions for the ongoing conflict regarding Iran's nuclear program, according to the Kremlin. Additionally, Putin proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to mark the end of World War II.
Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, recently spoke with
Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, concerning key international issues, including the conflict over Iran's nuclear program and ongoing tensions in Ukraine.
This conversation marks the first publicly acknowledged dialogue between the two leaders since March 9th, which was prior to the initiation of military action against Iran by the US and Israel on April 18th.
During this phone call, Putin suggested the idea of implementing a temporary ceasefire to celebrate the anniversary of the end of World War II next month.
This proposal aligns with Putin's previous efforts last year when he announced a similar truce; however, it was not agreed upon by Kyiv and only lasted for three days.
The Kremlin aide, Yuri Ushakov, provided further details on the conversation.
He noted that while specific proposals regarding Iran were not disclosed, Putin emphasized that any resumption of hostilities in the Middle East would have extremely detrimental consequences for all involved parties.
Ushakov reaffirmed Russia's commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program.
One such proposal put forth by Russia includes removing Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium from the country.
Furthermore, Ushakov highlighted that Russia plans to maintain communication with both Iran and key regional players, including Gulf states and Israel, in order to prevent any resurgence of hostilities in the area.
The conversation between Putin and Trump lasted over an hour and a half, described as being conducted in a friendly, candid, and business-like manner.
In relation to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Ushakov shared that Putin suggested a temporary ceasefire in celebration of the Soviet Union's role in defeating Nazi Germany during World War II.
According to Ushakov, Trump expressed support for this initiative, acknowledging the historical significance of the occasion.
Additionally, Trump expressed optimism regarding an imminent agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine.
The conversation also addressed allegations by Putin that Ukrainian forces have been employing 'openly terrorist methods' by targeting civilian sites on Russian territory.
This comment appears to reference ongoing Ukrainian strikes against strategic locations, particularly within the oil sector near Russia's borders.
