Over Half of Sudan's Population in Need of Humanitarian Aid: NGO Chief
The head of the Danish Refugee Council estimates that more than half of Sudan's population, over 30 million people, requires humanitarian assistance due to ongoing conflict and displacement.
More than half of Sudan’s population is in need of humanitarian aid, according to Charlotte Slente, the Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council.
This dire situation arises from the war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been ongoing since April 2023.
The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of nearly 12 million individuals, and has triggered one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.Sudan, with an estimated population of around 50 million people as per World Bank data from 2024, is currently facing immense suffering, as highlighted by Slente.
Her comments come after a recent field visit to areas in neighboring Chad that border Sudan’s western Darfur region, which has witnessed intense fighting recently.The situation has become increasingly dire, with the RSF seizing control of El-Fasher, a key town and the last stronghold of the army in Darfur, following an 18-month siege.
Reports of atrocities have escalated, including violations of international humanitarian laws.
Slente has observed mass killings and instances of sexual violence within Sudan.
She also noted detentions, abductions, forced displacement, and torture as common occurrences.Slente criticized the international community for not taking sufficient action to address these severe humanitarian needs on the ground.
She emphasizes that statements alone have limited impact in stopping the violence and preventing further atrocities.
Additionally, several cities including Babanusa, El-Obeid, Kadugli, and Dilling are under siege, yet their plight remains relatively unnoticed.Slente urges the international community to shift from managing the consequences of this conflict towards actively preventing the numerous human rights violations occurring in Sudan.
