Deaths Mount Amid Aid Shortages and Hunger Crisis in Gaza

At least 40 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire while seeking aid, with five more dying from starvation as humanitarian crisis deepens.
The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has led to a dire situation where basic necessities such as food and burial shrouds are becoming increasingly scarce.

At least 40 Palestinians lost their lives on Monday after being killed by Israeli gunfire and airstrikes while seeking aid, according to health authorities.

Additionally, five more individuals succumbed to starvation or malnutrition, bringing the total number of deaths from hunger to 180 since the war began, including 93 children.

The crisis has reached such extremes that white shrouds, essential for Islamic burials, are now in short supply due to Israeli border restrictions and the rising number of daily fatalities.

The scarcity of resources is reflected in the use of thick patterned blankets as an alternative for wrapping the deceased.

The situation has prompted desperate calls from those affected for an end to the conflict and a restoration of peace.

Bilal Thari, a 40-year-old Palestinian, expressed the collective sentiment among mourners at Gaza City’s Al Shifa hospital: "We don’t want war, we want peace, we want this misery to end.

We are out on the streets, we all are hungry, we are all in bad shape..."

In response to these incidents, Israel has maintained that it is taking steps to allow aid into the region.

Measures include pausing military operations for parts of the day in certain areas and announcing protected routes for aid convoys.

However, humanitarian agencies have criticized these efforts, emphasizing the need for increased access to aid by land and air, as airdrops alone are deemed insufficient.

Despite the entry of over 23,000 tons of humanitarian aid in the past week through more than 1,200 trucks, according to Israel’s COGAT agency, hundreds of these trucks have yet to reach distribution hubs.

This has led to concerns over the effectiveness and timeliness of aid delivery amidst a population in dire need.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is further exacerbated by reports of looting of aid supplies by displaced individuals and armed groups.

With estimates suggesting that around 600 aid trucks need to enter daily, as compared to previous figures allowed by Israel before the conflict, the current situation highlights the critical need for increased and more secure access to resources.

The war in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has led to a staggering number of casualties.

Over 60,000 Palestinians have lost their lives according to Gaza health officials, with concerns growing over the protection and welfare of those still trapped in the conflict zone.
